Speedometer shows going faster than it really is
#2
If it's only off a few MPH, this is most often caused by changing tire size. If the car is old enough to have a mechanical speedometer, this is corrected by replacing a small plastic gear that is just inside the transmission where the speedometer cable attaches to it with the correct gear for your tires. If it's new enough to have an all-electronic or digital speedometer, tire stores or the dealer can reprogram your car's computer to correct this. If it's really far off, something other than tire size is likely causing it. Electronic speedometers read speed based on pulses form one of the antilock brake sensors, so a sensor or the speedometer electronics could be bad, and that is usually something a dealer has to figure out.
