What is the normal running temperature range for a 96 deville?, nonconcours

I assume you mean coolant temperature. I have a '97 so it should be the same. Mine runs between 196 degrees and 206 degrees.

up to 220 is normal.
Getting much over 225 something is probably not right.
235 - 240 shut it off.

Thank you. I just purchased a 96 deville with only 82,000 miles.I can smell coolant around the base of the windshield but nowhere else. I have added coolant and it has seemed to be fine. The car usually runs around 210-225 degrees, any ideas?

Pressurise the system and look for the leak.
That's what i would do.

Still can't find a leak I looked at every fitting and everyhose, there isn't even any coolant on the ground. But it definetly smells like coolant and still runs up to 220, mabye this is normal?

I bought a '96 DeVille about a month and half ago and I had a leak also, but it was coming from the front passenger side. It turned out to be a crack in the plastic where the hot water hose connects to the radiator. Before I fixed this the tempature would run as high as 215 degrees, but once I replaced the radiator it typically runs aroun 205 degrees. Now I do not do a lot of driving at any one time so this could be a factor.

I would definitely take it to a garage and have your system pressure tested. Check your oil dip stick and see if your oil looks like chocolate milk. If it is then you have a leak from a gasket from the engine and this is where your coolant is coming from.

That is exactly where the smell is coming from, the plastic cover on the passenger side. There is a definete gap where the heater hoses go in, it looked a little too big to me. What did you have to replace to cure the problem and how much was it?

Sorry it is the plastic cover that is on the firewall where the gap is.

With the gap being next to the firewall, my guess the leak would be at the heater core. I would check that. Check on the inside under the glove compartment and see if it is damp there.

BTW, I changed the spark plugs in my caddy and it was an easy job.
