California Smog Test, L37 Northstar?
I'm extremely interested in the L37 Northstar V8 engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Premium_V_engine#L37); however, I live in California, and I am concerned about keeping my 'project' street-legal.
Basically, I want to put your awesome L37 Northstar V8 in the back of my Mazda MX-6. Doing so should result in the highly favorable mid-engined rear wheel drive setup with a curb weight of no more than 3000 pounds, which again results in a highly favorable 1:10 power to weight ratio.
I'm not entirely sure if the smog checks are bracketed by vehicle type, engine size, or if they have specific emission ranges per vehicle. If you guys are able to provide me with the data sheet on your smog check paperwork, then I can compare that to the ranges on my own smog check data sheet, and can draw my conclusions as to whether this will be a viable option
Here are my working ranges on the Mazda. I live in the enhanced test area where they put your car on the dyno. My Mazda's emissions were a bit above what was considered 'average' but nowhere near the maximum.
15mph (1734 RPM): Max HC(PPM): 88, Max CO(%) 0.52, Max NO(PPM) 704
25mph (2729 RPM): Max HC(PPM): 53, Max CO(%) 0.50, Max NO(PPM) 738
So, if you've done your Enhanced California Smog Check on your Cadillac with the L37 Northstar V8 and still have your paperwork handy, could you please post your numbers up here? Thanks!
