My 96 Councours will shift, but it is really stiff. I mean to the point thatI think if I am not ginger with it, it might break the shift lever. Has anyone else had a problem like this? I am thinking a bent linkage or something.

It sounds like you may need shifter cable. If it binds bad enough you can break steering column.

Yes it is an auto on the column. What I mean is from park to any gear, it is extremely difficult to shift, like something is in a bindand yes I am scared of breaking the column.

there is a pivot bolt on the column that starts to bind over time.you may be able to lower the column and spray with wd40 and work back and fort untill it frees up. or remove the bolt, cleani it apply greas and reinstall. it takes a allen head to remove
