Default 1981 Cadillac BUY...yes or no ??

Would a 1981 Cadillac 2 door, be a good year caddy to buy? Did all 1981 model have the 4-6-8 firing type engine for fuel economy? I heard that was a bad engine.
How hard would it be to eliminate the 4-6-8 microprocssor control and connect the engine to full time 8 ?
This car is cherry with 65,000 miles.
thanks....

If this is a simple yes or no question I would answer NO
Not a good car to buy.
Anything After 96 would be a better choice.
Any Caddy with Northstar engine would do Great.
But just don't relay only on my answer, wait to get more answers.

Just purchased a 1981 Fleetwood Brougham myself in June. It has been a challenge learning all the mechanical stuff for sure but all in all I would say it would be a good buy. That said I am assuming that you would be doing most of the work. Mine still has a few electronic gremlins to iron out but the mechanical end is pretty much in order now. The 368 engine was only used in 1980-1981 and is not a bad engine if you don't expect too much power. It was rated at 140 h.p. which sounds low for a 368 c.i. power plant. The engine codes can be a challenge to extract from the computer but you could always take it to the Cadillac dealer for a quick report. If you do decide to buy this car would be willing to help you out as I have the manuals, etc. Take care and good luck. Don.

Thanks for the help......I did more research on the 1981 and decided not to buy it. I had a 1974 and a 1984 both were good cars. The 1974 was a gas HOG but the 84 did pretty good. I should have kept the 84........
I'll consider finding something post 1996..............adios

i come from austria and have a 81 sedan deville with V8-6-4 (you can choose manually or let the car decide how much cylinders) and i have to say the car runs! okay little things like changing a sensor but all in all the car runs very good

my father has a 87 fleetwood d'elegance and it's the same it runs and runs without problems!

but you must know!

I'm satisfied with my 81 sedan

I know alot of cars sell for alot of money on eBay, it is crazy. I see alot of BMW's I think for $90, 000 each.
