the hard top latches are different starting in 1990 1/2 ... we call it the Phase 2 era.
A Phase 2 hard top will run you about 3 times what the early hard tops run ...
$300 - $500 vs $800 - $1,200
now .. here is the dirty little secret .. an early Phase 1 hard top will fit a 1991 by adding two eye bolts that cost $3 .. and they are more reliable than the "motorized" tops of 1990 1/2 - 1993 ..
shhhhhhhh shhhhhh .. the Allante nuts go crazy when they hear this ...
I got three Allante cars and I still dont qualify to be a nut .. how many Allantes do you have ?
now .. if I may, why?
few use the hard tops unless you drive in harsh weather.
welcome to our site ...
ps .. moving this thread to the Allante section ...

Yeah, someone mentioned something about latches...I just wasn't sure if they would make the 87 fit the 91. They said it was releatively cheap to do...
I actually don't own an Allante...I'm doing the leg work for my aunt!! She just bought it and has a soft top, but since we live in Boston she wanted to get a hard top before winter comes!!!
Sorry, by the way, for posting in the wrong forum...wasn't sure if the Allante I was asking about was the same as the Allante forum that I found (and you moved me to!)..thought maybe it was for some kinda special edition!! I know next to nothing about cars...
Thanks for your help and thanks for the welcome!!!

RE: 1991 Allante
Well Zal, since my "87" came with the original hardtop I haven't paid all that much attention to the conversion process. I know the tops are identical except for the "front" latches and there are several commercialconversion kits available for roughly about $200.00 but I understand the "eye" bolts work just fine, along with a little added weatherstripping. How about putting the questioner in contact with B.Coates who I believe has done the three buck conversion.

after having both types, i decided that I dont trust the phase two latches but i have all the confidence on the hooked latches of the early cars which, if i may say so, were probably copied from the Mustang convertibles of the '80s .. and I trust those also.
so, where is B.Coates these days ?

We have a network and sometimes we call on people as they are needed.
some no longer have the Allante but still hold the knowledge.
They also keep repeating something about having a life beyond the internet so they
dont hang around, but often, do come when summoned - hopefully.
At any case, this will show you a whole lot of what you want to know:
