Default Trans noise

Crazy clicking noise coming from tranny. I disconnected the converter and there's no noise. It kinda quiets down when it warms up. When it is cold it clicks real loud and it changes to a different tone when in gear. I dropped the pan and it is spotless. Would the solenoids make all that noise? Car is a 2005 CTS, 3.6 ......

I've never heard of the solenoids in the 5L40E being noisy. Also, you stated that disconnecting the converter eliminated the noise, so the noise is mechanical. We are seeing a lot of pump failures on this trans, so that may be what you are experiencing.
Does it make this noise all the time, only while sitting still, or when moving?
Does it change with RPM?
Does it change with MPH?
