Default 04 CTS shifter lever

I asked in general but figured I'd ask here also. I have a guy that has an 04 CTS 3.6L auto. He says the car won't start unless he moves the shifter out of park and then back into park, then the car will start. Would this be a shifter cable adjustment or is there some sort of a safety switch on the shifter assembly that will not allow it to start? Thx

Could very well be a cable adjustment, but it could also be a malfunctioning MLPS(manual lever position switch...also know as a neutral safety switch)

Hey thanks, I knew there was a switch, I just didn't know what it was called. I'll have him check it out.
