Default Head Gasket? 1998 ETC

I have a 1998 Eldorado ETC.(85,ooo miles) and a few weeks ago it overheated on the highway, and i had it towed home...added anitfreeze, and restarted. it took time at idle, but it began to overheat again. Checked anitfreeze level, and it didnt seem to lose any, but i didnt let it run too long....there is a wet sooty residue in the exhaust tips, but no antifreeze on the ground, or anywhere else. i have it in the garage running, and do not smell any sweet smell, just exhaust smell.....is the tailpipe residue enough to tell its a head gasket?

I myself don't know ~ I guess if you had alot of white smoke from the tailpipes it would be a head gasket... Hopefully its just the thermostat.

i understand that white smoke or milky oil is not something these engine produce with blown head gaskets? They act a little differently than typical engines....
