You most likely will not be able to check fluid yourself, to check fluid there is a plug in the side of the transmission where the you check fluid level while engine is running and car is level. The cheapest and easy way to have fluid level checked is to have oil changed at Caddy dealer where they top off all fluids and specifficaly request level be checked. As far as does it need changed?, over 50k and in doubt change it, flushing maybe less costly than a service with filter and gasket, but if transmission is not acting right flushing may make it worse so if trans isn't acting right have diagnosed first. NOTE: Catera auto trans is replaced not repaired.GM does not sell parts to rebuild trans in the US, but there maybe aftermarket co.s that do.Hope it helps
