Disappearing Vent Windows on 1939/40 convertible
Many, many years ago, a 1939/40 Cadillac 2 door convertible was donated to my town's charity auction. Beverly Farms, Mass was the site of some very affluent folks and they often participated in town events. It appeared to be a standard convertible (that is, it was NOT custom bodied or a special edition) and had one very interesting feature. With the door window up, you would crank the handle to lower the window. When the window was in the full down position, you could crank the handle some more (always in the same direction) and the vent window would rotate towards the rear of the car and disappear. Can anyone provide info on this feature? Both door windows/vents functioned alike. Obviously, with the top down, the profile was racier with the vent window "disappeared." As I recall, when the vent "disappeared" completely, a chrome or stainless steel garnish molding popped into place along side the top of the window frame to make the top of the door smooth.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
