Post Texting and driving being a larger problem.

im sure some of us including me were guilty of texting while driving. This has been a widespead problem. This is even worse for teens though, who spend nearly most of their time on cell phones.

Heres a video that may be used in drivers ed to show our teens what the consequeces may be.

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/T...-UK_703414.htm

they have compared drunk driving and texting while driving, and found that the two are very close as far as accidents being caused by these problems. In some states they have already made it illegal to be on cell phones while driving unless you have hands free. Also they have made it mandatory teen drivers not to have friends in the car or be on cell phones to help these problems. one thing that may happen is insurance rates may go up for teens because of this problem. I just thought i would post this to possibly help someone who may have a teen who drives and does this, to give them something to think about when they pick that phone up. If its that important to look at, have the courtesy to pull over so others are'nt in harms way as well.

Also the following information is regarding National (US) Teen Driving Statistics taken from the Insurance Information Association…

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers.
16 year-olds have higher crash rates than drivers of any other age.
16-year-olds are three times more likely to die in a motor vehicle crash than the average of all drivers.

3,490 drivers age 15-20 died in car crashes in 2006, up slightly from 2005.
Drivers age 15-20 accounted for 12.9 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 16 percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes in 2006.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates the economic impact of auto accidents involving 15-20 year old drivers is over $40 billion.

A recent report by AAA estimates the cost of crashes involving 15-17 year olds to be $34 billion.

According to a 2005 survey of 1,000 people ages 15 and 17, conducted by the Allstate Foundation More than half (56 percent) of young drivers use cell phones while driving, 69 percent said that they speed to keep up with traffic 64 percent said they speed to go through a yellow light. 47 percent said that passengers sometimes distract them. Nearly half said they believed that most crashes involving teens result from drunk driving.
31 percent of teen drivers killed in 2006 had been drinking, according to NHTSA. 25 percent had a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.
Statistics show that 16 and 17-year-old driver death rates increase with each additional passenger (IIHS).

that's a pretty realistic event that is happening daily and no one seems to think its serious issue. parents do it, and kids follow suite.

Will Smith in the movie "Seven Pounds" did it for me !

IF you text and drive .. if your kids just started driving ... rent the movie !

Metrolink accident claims 25 lives ...

The 2008 Chatsworth train collision occurred at 16:22 PDT (23:22 UTC) on Friday September 12, 2008, when a Union Pacific freight train and a Metrolink commuter train collided head-on in the Chatsworth district of Los Angeles, California, in the United States. The scene of the accident was a curved section of single track on the Metrolink Ventura County Line just east of Stoney Point.

Before the collision, the Metrolink train may have run through a red signal before entering a section of single track where the opposing freight train had been given the right of way by the train dispatcher. The Metrolink train’s engineer was near the end of a work week of long split shifts, making fatigue a subject of the investigation, along with distraction from text messages he was sending while on duty. The accident remains under investigation; meanwhile the basic cir***stances have been released to the public, but the official report determining probable cause is expected to take up to a year to complete.
