Salvation Army & 2010 Winter Olympics Vancouver & international sex slaves
Welcoming the athletes and spectators who will be coming to Vancouver and Whistler from across the globe to attend the 2010 Winter Olympics in February, will be 1,500 and 2,000 young prostitutes working in Vancouver, many as young as 13.
The Salvation Army website claims Vancouver is a port of entry for the international sex slaves and that prostitutes in the Downtown Eastside is somehow indebted to a pimp or gang, and lives in bondage.
Plans by the Salvation Army is to confront the problem by taking a two-pronged attack:
reducing the supply of children and women who can fall prey to traffickers;
lessening the demand for sex with prostitutes.
“The girls aren’t on the street selling themselves. They’re out working, and not by choice . . . . ‘She didn’t choose you, you chose her — and that’s rape." They also hope the graphic images will help put a face on human trafficking.
The Sex Industry Worker Safety Action Group Vancouver claims the campaign is misleading and launched its opposition to the campaign on the eve of the Salvation Army’s Weekend of Prayer for Victims of Sex Trafficking, today through Sunday.
