Red face A/C not working

Hello Cadillac people! I want to thank you all as I have searched your posts for 2 years when I needed some questions answered and have gotten some pretty good results.

My problem is this. I need a new compressor on my 2003 CTS. My reliable mechanic (family) says that I shouldn't be driving the car like that at all because the current compressor is bad.

But is it ok if I just don't turn on the AC or any cooling or heating devices? Can I just continue to drive with the windows open til I get up the 500 bucks? I've been driving it like that since march 2009 and I really just need a couple more weeks to get to and from work before I can pay to have it fixed.

Thanks!

Thanks so much! It was the smoking that he was worried about. But it doesn't smoke when its off. Sorry, I forgot why he said it would smoke.
