Wait 3 minutes message
I thought i'd share my experience with this subject as I went through this for about 6 months. I've seen numerousss threads and posts on the topic and the majority of the answers is pretty technical, and lead you to the most drastic of measures, to which I found out the problem really wasn't that bad.
So my story goes I went out to the car one day to take off, and the car doesn't turn over, I get the message "security disabled, take out key, wait 3 minutes" in my 1999 Cadillac deville. So I did and it started up. However throughout the next 5 months it did this constantly, even leaving me stranded for up to 6 hours... yes 6 hours of repeating the same step over and over and car wouldn't turn. So like many who've had this problem I googled, searched, asked neighbors that were deep car people. And the answer I always got was so costly "which I couldn't afford" or so in depth that me not having any mechanical specialties left me confused.
Finally after one of my 6 hours stranded moments a mile from the house, the car finally starts and I head home. Turn off car and go inside and then all of a sudden this thought comes into my head. I go out to the car and check the ignition switch. It was loose, and a little pull could kind of pull the igniton out even though it was ever so slight. I instantly called one of my neighbors over who I've talked to this situation about before, and showed him what I was seeing. And he said "how did I not even think to do that!" Given he fixes his own vehicles and has every tool imaginable I was shocked by it as well.
Turns out all I needed was a new ignition switch, which yes you have to get a new key cut sorry ($160 for the whole job for me). I was finally lead to an answer that made sense. When you adjust the steering wheel height, the ignition wire can get smashed and ultimately cut. And yes I as well as others that have driven my car adjust the steering wheel quite a bit so it was credible. Anyways when and if the wire gets smashed and cut enough it can lead to the issue of the car not turning over, and the wait 3 minute message. Once I had the ignition switch replaced (16 months ago) I have never again seen that error message. I just wanted to throw out my experience on this topic in hopes it may help someone else before they look into the whole passkey 3 diagrams and topics which could make you pay more money for nothing.
On a sad note the Caddy has many new messages which ended up costing me $500 45 days ago, and is now happening again ughh (not related to this topic).
