The PCM will automatically upshift when the engine hits the rev limiter. It will also downshift all by itself once the rpm goes down.

Throw these Northstar caddies into 1st gear and it'll enter sort of a "sports" mode, the shift velocity will max out and the transmission will not upshift until you hit the rev limiter, it will also downshift once you slow down. Pretty cool feature that isn't even covered in the owner's manual.
