Default Northstar - fuel injector cleaner

I have heard not to run fuel injector cleaner in these motors, nor any additive. I have 36,000 miles on my Northstar (2002 Eldorado). I just picked the car up, I wanted to know if it would hurt or benefit to add some injector cleaner just as routine maintenance.

Engine had slight knock when started cold outisde. After a WOT run seemed to much improve. I was wondering if I should just continue some WOT runs (as the car was babied) or add a can of seafoam or GM cleaner to the gas tank. Also thought of perhaps instead of using a top end cleaner, just add a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas while continuing the WOT runs. I've never had issues running MMO but not sure on how well it loosens or disvolves carbon.

Lucas fuel injector cleaner any good?

two different items.

on the WOT .. please read the WOT that WE have in this site's FAQ and follow it EXACTLY. There are variations of the WOT out there, ours came from GM Drive Train Eng and we know works well IF followed exactly. I bet you are using a bit more oil than you like. A well executed WOT curriculum should improve all these symptoms. Also, make sure you have the proper oil in the crankcase. What the WOT does is loosen stuck piston rings that may be held by carbon - it is a matter of extreme cycling, low to high loads that removes the carbon, not cleaners. I have no experience with the Marvel oil ..

on the injector cleaner .. the problem is that there is no "fits all" rule .. the older cars had injectors with windings that dissolved with the solvent (cleaner), injectors for the newer cars have been redesigned.
On either, the older or newer cars, it is of IMO that the injector cleaner should only be used when you are to drive the car and go through all the fuel in the tank within a couple of days. I do the fuel injector cleaning when traveling and plan to burn all the fuel in the tank in ONE DAY. Do not add to a tank of gas that is going to sit there for weeks .. highly advice to do NOT do that, any car, any maker, any year.

IMO, LUCAS is a well respected name in all their products.
They dont do snake oils, and their claims are backed with years and years of experience.

One last comment .. your 2002 is over 5 years old .. coolant was changed out yesterday, right?
read our FAQ ...
