Default How to Stop Your Car During Sudden Acceleration

How to Stop Your Car During Sudden Acceleration

as you watch, be ready for the message DO NOT PUMP BRAKES .. that may disable the brakes on toyota cars.

any firmware controlled care, not only toyota...

toyota gas pedal ...

CTS is the maker of the toyota gas pedal -
while admitting to their gas pedal sticking or binding, is denying responsibility for the WOT run-a-way engine episodes. So Toyota continues, must continue, to look elsewhere for the primary causative factor.

Until that time comes any vehicle that uses the same parts and firmware design source (NipponDenso/Denso US) as Toyota/etc will remain "suspect".

The way Denso has been known to operate in the past not even Toyota may ever know what the problem was/is, nor the FIX.
I would imagine the fix will come as a "reflash" with a public announcement that the "reflash" will be to facilitate a failsafe. Failsafe will be to drive the throttle plate to idle when the brake is used but also "buried" in the reflash will be a true fix for the firmware problem that is the root cause of these current episodes.

explanation of how the gas pedal and brake pedals work without linkages, and controlled by the computers ...

drivers would be shocked to know that, when it comes to automotive controls, drivers of modern cars fly by wire.

the european Airbus ushered in an era in which electronics replaced direct hydraulic controls in airplanes. Automobiles have since followed. Gone are the days when the accelerator or brake pedal were directly connected to the throttle by a physical connector, such as a cable or linkage.

many makes - not just Toyota - use electronics act as the intermediary.

Drivers who don't realize that they're flying by wire may waste precious time trying to pry up the pedal or pump brakes rather than switching to neutral and pulling to the side of the road.

And about the possibilities for hacking vehicle firmware? "What if someone pirates something on there?" he asks. There are no antivirus scans for vehicles. In California, there have also been reports of viruses attacking car computers trough the DMV computers used to link the cars during the SMOG tests - unsure if that has been verified but nevertheless, the potential is there.

Default when all else fails, install a kill switch ?

it is now a customer confidence feature? I'm speechless !

Toyota reports that they have issued about 10 million recall notices worldwide for stopping and acceleration issues on various models.

Sudden acceleration has been blamed in 34 fatalities, federal records show. Since last fall, the company has issued 10 million recall notices, with about 2 million vehicles subject to more than one recall.

Toyota has received nearly 38,000 calls and reports from customers about sudden acceleration problems in its vehicles.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is holding a hearing on the recalls Tuesday, estimated that there might have been about 2,600 incidents of unintended acceleration in the last decade, or about 600 more than the number of complaints filed by Toyota owners to federal regulators.

------------------------------------

"By the end of 2010, toyota will begin installing a system that shuts down the engine when the brake and gas pedals are pressed simultaneously. It's an extra safeguard against sudden acceleration."

"We will install advanced brake override systems in all our new models -- making us one of the first full-line manufacturers to offer this customer-confidence feature as standard equipment,"

"These actions underscore that Toyota is going above and beyond making the necessary vehicle modifications and repairs to ensure that our customers can be completely confident in the safety and reliability of the cars and trucks they drive,"

~ James Lentz, president of Toyota's U.S. operations, Feb 23, 2010

A runaway Prius out control on the 8 Freeway in San Diego!

That was the runaway Prius alert that came in Monday, an accelerator stuck, Prius was speeding out of control.

Prius driver did the obvious - called 911 - and requested help.
James Sikes -driver- had no idea what to do.
The CHP said that the gas pedal got stuck near La Posta Indian Reservation at 1:30 PM Monday - and the brakes were not working.

CHP came along side of speeding Toyota and instructed driver to press the brakes and the e-brake pedal at the same time. That brought the speed down to 50 mph, Sikes killed the engine, CHP maneuvered in front of the Toyota and the car as the car slowed to a stop.

Toyota’s response?

“We’re sending a field technical specialist to San Diego to investigate the car and find out what happened. We won’t be able to comment on what any possible problems with the car were until we take a look at the car.”
