Almost forgot!
Is it advisable to lift the car completely before I service my transmission. Or wold just putting it on some ramps be sufficient. I don't have any experience with cars and I don't know much, but I want to service my own car because the prices of the dealership her are out f this world!! Ther wanted $365 for a front and rear end brake job!!! I paid $55 out of my pocket to do it myself!!!
If you were to consort a service manual, and I highly recommend the factory versions, I've found most often it's recommended to have a lift, as pulling a tranny requires as much space as the trans is to get it out.
Some servicing, keeping the whole trans on the car/under the car, you can use jack stands I believe. I've offered half of a shop est to friends I know at work to do tough jobs for me. If you know people like them who own motorcycles, ATVs, etc, and do work on their toys, they most likely are experienced and have the investment in a wide range of tools for mech. repairs, which is certainly recommended but also extremely expensive considering the specialized tools used by automakers are used on virtually all areas of the automobile. You can rent them or scour eBay as well.
I need a tranny swap right now for my 4.5 Deville and I am looking at a wrecking auto yard to possible install one they have pulled, though initially suggesting I have someone put it in, my buddy is not inclined to do that as it is FWD and a major task to put it simply.

ramp or lift, you just need enough space to be under your vehicle with a socket wrench and a drain pan,
EITHER WAY, Secure your vehicle from rolling!
jack stands are the safest way!
be carefull and props to you for doing your own wrenching, i do all mine,
good luck
