1954 Ford Concept

2006 Shelby

"More than 100 years after the automobile's invention, only 12 percent of the world's population currently enjoy its benefits. The AUTOnomy concept, we believe, could be the foundation for extending the benefits of personal transportation to the remaining 88 percent of the world's population."

"By combining fuel cells and x-by-wire, we can explore the design, use and marketing of transportation devices that truly give our customers what they want - regardless of where or how they live now or in the future," Burns said.

"This is the first concept vehicle that captures the vision and potential of where fuel cell technology will lead the industry in every region of the world, well within the lifetimes of most of the people who will be visiting this show. This is a global vision because GM and its alliance partners have an unparalleled ability to design and build vehicles all over the world."

"Because of its x-by-wire controls, the driver has no pedals to operate, merely a steering guide - called X-Drive - that is easily set to a left, right or even center driving position."

"With all of its propulsion and control systems contained within a six-inch-thick skateboard-like chassis, the vehicle body is freed from traditional design requirements. "There's no engine to see over," explained Wayne Cherry, GM Vice President of Design. "People could literally sit wherever they are comfortable. Drivers wouldn't have to sit in the traditional left-hand location. They could move to the center of the vehicle or they could move much closer to the front bumper or further back. "It will take a little getting used to, but it's maximum freedom, maximum space for people and their stuff. There wouldn't be foot pedals or a steering column. The body shape could be literally anything you want it to be."

"Corvette's Italian Solution

Despite its undoubted competence and its pleasantly powerful attraction for serious drivers, I cannot get excited about the Chevrolet Corvette. It does not generate the lust in my heart that the 1953 model did.

the Corvette is duller than a day in Dayton. It hasn't as much of that quality called "presence" as a GMC pickup. The GMC looks like what it really is; the Vette doesn't.

And the sad thing is that it could be fixed. Respectable manufacturers all over the world have hired on designers such as Pininfarina to create visual excitement. GM even hired Pininfarina for the Cadillac Allante (and then didn't buy off on the recommended treatment).

Why in the name of fiberglass won't GM admit that its corporate design review process just will not permit something as thrilling as a Ferrari Scagletti to escape from the drawing boards at the design center?

Parenthetically, the same applies to the Acura NSX, which remains uninspiring despite its unquestioned excellence as a driving machine. A Pininfarina or Giugiaro design could have made the NSX a car for the ages instead of a sporty Acura.
What I suggest will never happen, I fear. The Vette will forever continue to show up at the ball wearing a rented tuxedo. But there's no reason why it should. The Corvette has the mechanicals to compete with the best sports cars in the world. An Italian exterior comensurate with the excellence that lies beneath the Vette's skin would complete the package."

"Jeep Hurricane, which is slicker that oiled okra. The Hurricane looks quite like a Baja racer. But what a racer it is. Surrounded by four big wheels, the body harbors not one but two 335-hp Hemis. As if that's not enough bling-bling for you, what would you say to a zero turning radius?
We're not kidding here. The turn-on-its-own-axis ability derives from the ability to toe-in both the front and rear wheels, creating a circle of rubber that allows the vehicle to reverse its field faster than a rabbit under fire."

"Talk about a dream come true. I was just inside a Ferrari Superamerica sitting shotgun with a saucy Italian flirt named Rosa behind the wheel.

OK, she was only demonstrating the car’s rearward-rotating roof, but the experience scores high enough to be my Play of the Week. And the roof is the first of its kind in the UNIVERSE!

The glass roof is framed with carbon-fiber and has five different tint levels that you can control from inside the car. Ferrari calls it the “Revocromico,” which makes it sound like some sort of evil dark lord. But hey, it’s their super car."

The Ausie Caddie that lacks nothing

"Bristling with power, technology and intent, the luxury roadster previews styling and hardware that GM may bring to Australia.

This Cadillac is a mobile test bed of components and technology that will shatter its reputation for building ill-handling land yachts.

The roadsters sharp, distinctive lines will be echoed in the next generation of cars from the General Motors luxury car division - some of which, the smart money says, will be sold in Australian Saab or even Holden dealerships in the next few years.

A first drive with its supercharged V8, retractable roof and advanced electronic stability system - shows Cadillac is out to rattle cages at BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz.

Cadillac's Seville STS sedan, powered by the muscular Northstar V8, is making inroads in Europe and Japan. But the Benz SLK-challenging this Cad, and a series of new Cadillacs released over the next years, could really change the face of the luxury car sector.

Features from Cadillac's styling heritage - vertical lights and egg-crate front grille among them - show the car clearly does not follow in the footsteps of any roadster rivals.

Hand-built and not to be pushed hard, this Caddie let us know it means business from the first turn of the key.

The 4.2-litre V8 comes alive with a satisfying burble, hinting at the potential of its 300kW. Its power and torque figures rival BMW's latest M5, the world's fastest production sedan. Cadillac reckons to dash from rest to 100km/h in a swift 5.3 seconds.

Derived from the current Northstar 4.6 but heavily revised, the quad-cam engine has an integrated supercharger/intercooler and continuously variable valve timing.

Unlike the current front-drive Seville, this Caddie transmits power via a four-speed automatic rear transaxle.

The drivetrain is bespoke but, for chassis and suspension, the concept borrows heavily from GM's Chevrolet division - and especially the Corvette's underpinnings.

The roadster charges forward readily, though acceleration slackens noticeably in second and third gears. The throaty exhaust growl alters pitch as the gears change and sounds good for a car.

Chassis stiffness at speed and steering response rate highly. Ultra-low profile tires and Corvette suspension might be expected to produce a harsh ride, but the Cadillac is surprisingly supple.

The roadster is intended to use the Seville's Stabili-Trak handling system, a cleverly engineered, complex system that maintains direction by combined application of suspension, brake and engine controls. Cadillac claims that, adapted for rear-drive, it will be the most advanced and capable stability system available.

On the open road, the styling is even more striking than on a show stand. To keep the profile clean, chief designer Kip Wasenko dispensed with exterior door handles in favour of a remote keyless entry fob, which opens the doors slightly when it unlocks them.

Wasenko says the unique hardtop - it retracts into the rear window section, then folds down under a deck lid - allowed his designers to maintain a rakish profile "without the compromise usually involved in creating a convertible".

The low-slung appearance is accentuated by the SLK-style wheel-at-each-corner stance and the long wheelbase relative to overall length.

Significantly, some of the high-tech features are likely to trickle down to future GM models in Australia. Its night-vision system uses an infra-red camera in the front bumper; radar and two sonar sensors detect objects behind the car; two cameras, rather than mirrors, pop up from the doors to provide the rearward view - and a flat-panel colour display on the console serves as an "infotainment" centre."

0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds

"In 1958, Ford built several car models, including the Volante,
which could use three fan motors to levitate from a parking
place and take to the air. But the most amazing of these
models was the Nucleon. What may have looked like a
Continental kit sitting on the large and flat rear deck was
the cover for a small nuclear reactor that would power the
car."
