GM reportedly executes Cadillac XLR

The Bowling Green Daily News reports that the Cadillac XLR will cease production forever this spring. Spawned from the eye-popping Evoq concept, the Corvette-derived (but Northstar-powered) hardtop convertible finds itself as General Motors' latest cost-cutting casualty. Its high price, low volume and decreasing sales do not make for a strong business case anymore, especially in an economic environment that is not conducive to new car sales in general. We've driven the XLR – the supercharged V-Series – and we like it a lot. Rare and stylish enough to still turn heads, fast enough to paste a wide, goofy grin on your face, and comfortable enough to let you cruise for hours on end – as good as it was, the XLR (and its V-Series counterpart) never quite got the formula perfected. It was doomed to perpetual also-ran status in its category compared to the benchmark set by the Mercedes-Benz SL. The Corvettes also had better engines, manual gearboxes and cost a lot less. The current CTS-V boasts a substantially better interior, is faster and costs less still. And so the XLR drives into the sunset this spring. Frankly, it's a pretty good ride to be making that drive in

GM mistake?!!! Who knows yet. I do have a friendly $10 bet with our old friend G.A.R.Y. that the XLR will not have a longer production run than the Allante (i.e if a 2011 XLR gets built, I be da loser.)

I've heard that. If the economy wasn't in the tank I don't believe this would be happening. Different cir***stances then the allante.

I will go to xlrforum to see what those guys are saying. That site is much like the allante specific site. Not many members but hard core owners.

Bill looks like I might have been a couple years short of winning the bet. When it's official, checks in the mail.

something broke at GM in the days of the 1980s.
they vowed to the bureaucrats with the mpg rules, re-sizing, and eternally fell out of sync.

GM comes out with good cars, at the wrong time (financial woos), at the wrong price, not fully tested, too many bugs, under powered or overpowered, always behind the curve. MB takes three or four times as long to put a car on the market, for good reason - debugging is a lengthy process.

Also, I believe that someone around this site hit the nail on the head.
GM goes to the old folks homes for advice and ideas, then goes out and tries to hit the 20ish crowd with the product that they cannot afford or want. Cadillac to this day carries the stigma earned in the 1980s; fuel hogs, old people cars (too expensive to buy or maintain), crappy engines (early 4100).

GM, probably never dreamed that the CTS would be a old folks car, they probably didnt go to the old folks homes on that one .. in fact, it didnt even looked like a Cadillac .. GM had this one drop on their lap and I bet they are probably stunned to this day what a winner the car has been.

Stealth (me) said it .. when people talk about cars, 20 years from now, the CTS-V, CTS-4 WILL BE the cars to have owned in this era of fosil fueled cars. IF GM got a CTS-V/4, that would be a .. OHH MY GOD car! Best they wait until they can do it right.

Gary, pay Bill now .. you aint got a chance!
I will keep my eyes peeled for a $5,000 XLR .. they are coming.
The hard core XLR owner sites will have all the fixes by then.

As many times as the Liberty street renegades have kicked OSU's butt and I've lost wagers to you GARY, it pains me to say I hope I lose this bet. Put the 10er towards some aged Crown Royal we'll drink 'er if we ever get Zal out of Californeee. Zal I've said for awhile that when they hit 20k every Allante guy will want both or move to the XLR. Hope it's a bit before they hit 5k but your pricing predictions on the Allante have been right on. (G.A.R.Y., thinking of trading off the old 1 year old sled for a Z51. How's she running?)

Info I read months ago left the XLR to die when the VETTE conv. seized production in the 2009/10 model year. One off cars are too expensive to build. For 2010 it would be due for some kind of redesign / update.

Bill
the z06 is doing great. Turned out to be a good daily driver. You can buy the 08's in South Florida now for 60k, so the z51 should be much cheaper and you still get 430 hp. As for the bet, I thought I had that one until the economy went in to the tank.
As for the crown royal reserve, next time you make it down this way I'll have some on the rocks for ya.

Bill,
it is going to have to go much lower, much less than $20k for todays $3,000 Allante owners to make such a move....

Bewley is a prime dealer, they keep the best of the best. Down Main St, 2 miles from home. Craigslist is fast becoming respectable as big ticket items start using the service.

I told them that if they will consider $10k, I will consider writing a check. It is not a "V" so that is my limit on that one. No call backs as of yet. It came up on craigslist.

2004 Cadillac XLR
MILES: 31588
VIN:1G6YV34A445600783
asking price is $29,991
