1998 sts 1998 sts, heat fan only goes on when it wants to?? Didnt work for a week froze my *** off, then ckd the coolant level, and noticed it was low, added about half a gal, and then just like that the heater kicked on????

worked that day, the next day diddnt then did, and now dosent!

 

check coolant AGAIN .. a low coolant level will not allow flow to the heater core and you have no heat.
although you THINK you filled the system, you probably did not.

thanks for the response, just ckd it again it looks full! how else can i put more in? I have the car running now with the cap off to see if it will circulate....anything else i can do?

 

its been running for 20mins or so, fluid level did not go down, its filled right to the top, NO HEAT FAN working??? I dont get it, thermostat??

what doesnt work .. heat or fan?
thermostat? if that had failed, you be overheating, its fine.

are both upper and bottom radiator hose HOT ?
are BOTH heater core hoses HOT?
does the fan work if you turn on the AC ?
what is the engine temp ?
any codes ?

when the fan DOES come on the heat is hot, the fan only comes on when it wants to it seems, without the fan there is no heat??
fan dosent come on with either the AC or HEAT modes

radiator hoses are hot
engine temp is right in the middle
dont know about codes, i dont have diagnostic equip

go to the FAQ section and learn how to pull codes, your car has built in diagnostics. it will talk to you about its ills and aches if you know how.

sounds like the coolant system is working OK.
fans .. connections or controller seems faulty. If it is intermittent, I bet on a connection being lose.

Ok so i read the FAQ's section on E gosts and codes....I went and pulled the codes, wrote down only 1, as i had no idea how to repeat the list and they read off very quiclky...b1343 / Air inlet door movement fault....

FYI the heat and fan ARE working today....go figure???!!

I decided to also reflash the car, buy disconecting the batt cables, and leaving them dis conected for 20min as per the instructions in the FAQ thread....hoping this will re boot the electrical system errors????

Something tells me this is a moisture issue! under the back seat the carpet is very wet, i think the trunk or the sunroof is leaking.

Bet would be sunroof, drain hoses can be blocked by dirt or stuff that falls off trees.

 

where exactly are these drain holes?? just did some research, and was reading the same thing, and some ideas on how to blow them out or un clog them with wire....
