Default High AC Gauge Reading

I bought a little refridgerent kit for my AC, when I hooked the gauge up to the low pressure port the reading was in the "warning zone" according to the gauge at a little over 100 psi. How is this possible when the car dash says the refridgerent is low?

I just went through this with my 98 Deville. I tried the cheapie R134 Kit and found the pressure high. I put a 12 ounce can in anyway! It made the AC work a little better but in the end it needed a new compressor. Some AC at speed but hot air at the stoplight. There was a knocking at idle that I think was the compressor getting ready to puke it's guts. It wasn't cheap but we're going cold this summer!
