What's the black tank under the battery

What's the black tank under the battery
Our 2001 Eldorado suffered a battery failure that dripped acid under the battery tray. It dripped on a small black plastic line that went to an egg-shaped black plastic tank mounted underneath the battery tray. I patched the line but wonder what the tank is for?
