Hello, looking to buy 01 Eldorado but it has some rust on wheel slots.....if there a way to remove the rust and still look good? Thanks

 

Also, the leather shift handle is very badly worn....,is it expensive to have rewrapped?

 

I had a Bonneville SSEi with rust on the chrome rims. Every spring I cleaned them with polishing compound to remove the rust followed by a coat of chrome polish. It was tedious and took about an hour per rim, but they looked brand new when they were finished. As for the shift handle, that's very common to have them deteriorate and look nasty. I'd check your local salvage yard or eBay for a replacement.

 

Good info,,..,never dreamed that would work....I guess the rubbing compound would take it back to the metal and the polish would bring back the chrome shine.

 

Make certain you use POLISHING compound, NOT RUBBING COMPOUND. Rubbing compound is more abrasive and could harm the finish of the rim. Like I said, it is very tedious, but the results were worth the time spent to me. Good luck

I'd feel bad if I didn't clarify that. FYI, I used Turtle Was polishing compound followed by Meguiars chrome polish for my rims.

Yes, by hand. There were areas you couldn't reach with even a drill mounted polisher on those Bonneville rims. I also found it much easier to remove the wheels and clean them on my workbench.
