Need help with 93 Eldorado

So I recently bought a 93 Eldorado which is having a few problems. This is my first car, and at first glance all it appeared to need was a new paint job. My father and I took it out on the road this morning and multiple problems began to occur, one of which being the car refused to shift. The display also went hay-wire and eventually just shut off completely. My dad thinks its a problem with the alternator, but i wanted to get some feedback before i start tearing the car apart. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
