Default Reservoir holds too much air; overheating but no coolant loss

2001 Deville Base

I replaced the reservoir because the old one had a hole in it. Ever since the new reservoir was installed, the temp gauge shows overheating way above the halfway mark. At first it starts small--gauge goes up slightly and then goes down to normal. Then after a few more rides, the air in system increases until the gauge reads a higher temp, almost totally to the top line. When I open the reservoir while the car is completely cool, it's not a hiss of air that comes out. It's a geyser. The cap goes up into the air. Can anyone offer ideas as to what could be happening?
