vapors? what vapors? exhaust gases ?
what are we talking about?

it really sounds like your gasket kissed it good bye.

1. change gasket - for long term

2. do the "pour the seal" into coolant system - for unk duration.

this is what happens when the COOLANT is not changes every TWO YEARS.

EVERYONE, forget GM and the 10 year thing, play it safe, change it every TWO YEARS!

I am having the same problem. I just bought mine knowing it had the problem. I think that it is a head gasket. I will start diving in and see what is wrong with mine.

i just got mine from my brother, 98 deville w/202k miles, and it's overheating too. i'm figuring do a coolant flush anyway cause lord knows he didn't keep up with maintenance, but when i replaced the starter the other day, i noticed about a 1/4 qt. of oilhad collectedunderneath the intake manifold in that lil' valley between the heads. think the head gasketsare related to both overheating AND leaking oil?

Not necessarily related to overheating, head gasket is leaking the oil in the valley. Its not very common but it does happens.

my grandpa has a 97 deville has the same o/h issue. he has the northstar. so far he has done crossover gaskets, water pump thermostat head gaskets and fluid change. the guy at the shop found a special kit a machinist out ofpa i think makes. those northstars are excellent motors but they are precision. if you have the headgaskets done and they are not done right it'll keep o/h and burning water. we're on our second rebuild b/c of improper assm. the first gasket set came from cadillac dealer so were gonna try this new set. as far as your starting issue it could be as simple as unplugging the relay and thunk it a couple times to trip it. plug and paly to see if it works.
