Added power steering and trans. filters
Got bored and wanted to modify something. I figured some extra filtration would be a good remedy.
The only place I could find room was between the bumper and the radiator. Tight fit but it worked out.
I color matched the filter head to the colored dip sticks. (red for transmission and orange for power steering)
I used wix #24764 filter heads (3/4-16 threads) and wix #51516 filters.
Though on the power steering a full size FL1/51515 will fit. Right now only the smaller diameter will fit on the transmission filter. I'm hoping a shorter (but same diameter as FL1) #51068 will fit. I will try that later.
I prefilled the filters before installing and I was surprised how fast the cold oils (about 40F) filled the filters.
I plan on changing them whenever I change the engine oil. which is around 5k mi.
here are some pics:
To make sure the transmission still flowed the minimum 1GPM (or "2 quarts in 30 seconds") this is how I checked it:
I used an empty gallon transmission fluid bottle that had the see through line and hash marks in quarts.
I unhooked the hose that goes back into the trans (after the rad., cooler, and filter) and had a helper with a stop watch start the engine and shut it off after 15 seconds and then looked to see how much was in the bottle.
and that was done after the engine was warmed up by idling. I dont have an engine temp gauge, so I just idled it until the engine fans came on.
and it flowed 1.5 quarts in 15 seconds, which would be 3 quarts in 30sec.
