Default N* Engine Number

Where is the engine number on a N* located? After finding the engine number, how does one decode it to determine the year of engine manufacture?

I ask as the owner of 93 Allante I am looking at asserts the engine was replaced in 2001, or so. I want to try and figure out whether the replacement engine was new or used.

if the engine was done by a dealer, a CARFAX should point out any major maintenance or engine replacement ..

if not, its a gamble at best .. IMO, all Allante N*s are suspect without do***entation - the recalls are not always executed or completed.
