We don't usually drive it hard, but occasionally we (my sons and I) drive it like we stole it. On the highway it's like driving a sports car. The headbolts never did come loose on it and the engine is 100% trouble free. We absolutely love that car and the engine is the best part of it.

It does consume a small amount of oil and always has. No biggy. The coolant has been changed regularly. I put the dexcool in it, but lately I've been reading bad things about the dexcool. Not sure if I should switch or not.
TOO LATE to chg fluid to cheaper green wal-mart type the dex prob has did the softening damage already to all-gaskets..but better-late than not at all f-the green envior-friendly crap much-like gas-mowers over elec never buy a elec anything mower or car! and buy only fish-killing basic-green el-cheapo coolant it is most relaible and does not ruin either your engine's gaskets or radiator as does dex! prob is most of us rarely change that fluid which is suppose to be twice a yr now who's into that? i'd say once every two-three yrs?or when the car needs a tuneup say 60,80,000 miles?that is 3rd yr driving!and that's why dex is bad it turns into a engine's enemy given time sittting the break-down rate verses the cheapo-green the green lasts 3-4 yrs before it loses potential and still does not harm the engine as does dex yellow!

Well said it is..that competition sharpens the skills. Here we have the example the Northstar v8 engine which is the outcome of American and Japanese technology competition. girdle setting is the specialty of this engine which enhances its performance.

I am looking for some specifics on the "LIMP HOME" mode that saves the motor from overheating.
1. How do you reset the system?
2. is there some sort of fuseable link that shuts down 4 cylinders?
3. Where is all of the sensors that control the coil packs?
Can you reset the PCM? How?
Thank You for ANY response

Default Northstar limp-mode

as regards to ANY CADDIE new or old featuring a engine limp-mode perk... take it as it is a perk NON-ELIMINATING..or turn-off as with a pass air-bag...
question why in the hell would ANYONE attempt to TURN-OFF OR DISABLE a engine-limp-mode condition!!!! DEAL-WITH THE PROBLEM DUDE...the limp mode only happens when either the engine overheats or transmission is failing..that's it!!! quit trying to cur***vent the problem and the caddie's computer in trying to by-pass a condition that is normal' my caddie does this because of those nasty headbolts being loose' once in a while i will be stuck in a situation with NO-WATER and no eles but a limp-mode condition!!! i always carry three 1 gal jugs of water and 1 coolant in the front area of the radiator i can hold up to three gal of coolant but i always always map-out all the hills and any other' engine-load-bearing situations before i venture out' with known blown heads on a car...u must know the terrain and distance and speed u can do with that said!!! never go on the freeways or do hilly terrain..by the way no after-market sealant crap will work on the GOD-AWFUL-NORTHSTAR EVEN 2013!!! NOTHING WORKS!!!

Default Limp Home Mode

My last car was a 1989 Cadillac Sedan Deville. It had the "Limp Home Mode" also. At one point, the lower radiator hose mount (on the radiator) broke off, spilling ALL the coolant. I was able to get it home, the only thing it did was whine about overheat and shut off the cruise control. I'm not sure about Northstars, as my 2002 Deville has not overheated.

Basically, Limp Home shuts down anything that would cause a load on the engine. The reset is simple: dump coolant into the system, and get the leak fixed!

I have to agree with you Shelonat.
Caddies should ALL come with a non-transverse V-8 and should be rear wheel drive.

Default Caddie sidewinder v-8

LARRY again!! NO V-8 was EVER produced by ANY COUNTRY nor manuf. to be installed sideways!!!! unless it was a caddie!!! and all will fail prematuerly!! i.e.before 150,000 miles a normal break-in for most gas-engines now..not life-span as in da god-awful northstar!!!! ask any gook-tech of any jap/koeran/european/and krout tech they all will tell u not-in my shop...da northstar to be repaired.. take it to caddie!!! bottom line NEVER EVER BUY A CADDIE with a northstar even da new ones will fail!!! long before 150,00 break-in miles..or run flawlessly w/o valve-covers nor intake ever disturbed!!! as with the other makes mentioned..as a retired caddie mech..is see caddie falling as in saturn/olds.. dey jus don't mix well with bemers and merceds even da lincoln has it beat..even buick will fall as dey also insist on a northstar in some of them both will be phased-out by gm the whole line of makes both cads and buicks if dey don't quit trying to cram a v-8 sideways with a one of a kind torpedo trans.. also a nightmare to repair/replace..and both engine and trans are too costly to r&r once warranties are finished! i seen pristine northstar caddies and buicks both in and out at yer local wrecking yards never wrecked nor even a cig-burn in a seat!! lined up like cordwood with blown heads leaking case half seals or blown torped-trannies in em..none were removed by wrecking yards since they are worthless to them..only hopes in dat a dey will be boned-out.Bottom line never by a gm with ANY NORTHSTAR ENGINE!!!NEW OR OLD..
