A new Caddy owner

Well, I picked up a 2000 cadillac eldorado, she that pearl white color. The only real question I have at this point is " What cars came with the fog lights that are on my car". Ones broken:eek:

I'm beginning to wonder if having a Northstar engine is a good idea. Mine is a 2000 with 134,000 miles it runs great, check engine is not on. Does use oil or coolant but man there are some haters of these motors wow!

In the V8 section of this forum there is a sticking where the guy is a "tech" and he seems to think that all northstar's over 100,00 are time bomb's. I got this car for work I get paid mileage and would like to think I can put 70,000 on it this year. I'm freaking the f@@## out now.

I'm not sure why this forum would have that thread as a sticky if it wasn't true. Help!!!

Northstars are expensive to fix and because of it people don't like them. I got mine with blown head gaskets, replaced them and drove the hell out of it. They can use some oil. they will turn a lot of RPM with out issue. Solenoid went in transmission so I drove it in second only for a couple weeks 4k @ 80 didn't hick up. The engine really needs to spin to keep rings free, just chugging around under 2500 causes it to carbon up. I drove mine like a hot rod. A little WOT or driving in 2 in town can help with keeping rings free. My uncle bought a 99 deville bought it with a 100k sold it with 400k and it's still rolling. He said he only did maintenance bought a 07 DTS. The main thing you have control over is: take car of the cooling system and don't overheat it. When low oil light comes on it will be 2 quarts low. Engine takes 7.5 quarts not 8 unless it has oil cooler (ETC & STS0 even then you want to check it during the last 1/2 quart. It also takes a while to drain down, so you will need to wait 15-20 min to check it.

I meant to say, it Does not use oil or coolant. I have read that if you have engine noise when its cold that there is carbon build up in the cylinder heads but Cadillac makes pour in solution for that.

Have you heard of this?

There is a several decarboners for cold start tapping that normally lasts a few minutes until engine get warm. Supposedly the tapping won't hurt anything, GM does have a TSB related to it, dealer may print you copy. Typically decarboning requires a soak time from several hours to overnight.
