Uncommanded start

Here's a problem that I only thought happened to British car drivers with Lucas ignitions. Last Saturday I drove my 2006 Cadillac SRX to Wisconsin. The trip took about 2 1/2 hours and covered about 160 miles. About three hours later when I sent my son to the car to get something, he came back and told me the car was running when he got to it. Smoke was coming out of the exhaust, the tach read 800 and the engine was warm. He got it to shutdown by unlocking and locking the doors with the remote. This car does not have a remote starter, although once I turned the key off, pulled it out of the ignition and it kept running. I'm sure it was shutdown when I left it. Anyone out there have any idea how it could start itself while no one is around?
