Trunk release not working-Why?

Hi folks,
Every time I have to open my trunk I have to pull down the back seat and pull the trunk release hanger inside the trunk behind the seat. The trunk release button on the outside of the trunk does not work when touched or pressed, and the trunk release button inside the cabin does not open the trunk either.

Does any one know what the issue may be? A fuse? Could a fuse cause the inoperability to open the trunk from the outside and inside of the car simultaneously as described above? Can any one offer any suggestions on a DIY to go to, or where I can start to solve the mystery and finally be able to use the trunk as it was intended to be used?

Thank you to all that take the time to ready my message and to those that read and respond kindly.

Thank you.
