Steering failure CTS 2003

After a 75 mile highway trip, I attempted to make a U turn into coffee shop.

Half way through U turn , steering wheel sumi locked and would not turn to left, I applied lots more pressure on wheel to complete turn, got a sound clunking, then made a sharp right turn into coffee shop , more locking and clink, then a left turn into parking space, lock and clunk again.

With coffee in hand nursed car another 50 miles to Cadillac dealer, who has now had car over a day, when they parked it for night it locked up on them, but this morning it would not lock again, they claim they went out to car every hour, to drive it around lot, with sharp turn left and right, but it would not relock.

Once it locks up on dealer lot, they intended to hook up to computer, to get trouble codes, and what is wrong, ????????

they state the steering his hooked into variouse modules , and electric system, and they need computer to tell them whats wrong???????

Not sure why they do not want to do it the old way, put it on lift ,take of wheels, and check all steering and front end componets, is its loose or out or alignment, or broken , thats what wrong.

The outside temp was about 16 F degrees, and power steering tank was full of fluid.

Any suggestions would be appriecated.
