catera issues?

hello,
new to the site. i have 1998 catera with 105,000 miles on it. All of a sudden the last few months it has become a problem. The wife was driving it a couple of weeks ago and it died in traffic, wouldn't restart, she called me cause her she sat in traffic at a stop light with 2 kids under 4 in the car.... so i hop into the work truck and haul to her rescue. just as i arrive at the scene it started. Well i have talked with my mechanic, and he's not sure.

So i go to get into it yesterday and it won't start in the garage. after a few attempts 15 min. later it starts runs ruff and then starts idling good. So i decide to drive it to work to see if it will die on me.. It doesn't but after work 2 days later it did the same thing wouldn't start right away?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Long distance help

Hi I am a long time catera owner, I have had my share of issues. I am a mechanic by trade. I have had a similar issue. If you have not fixed this yet, try this. When it is malfunctioning, have someone crank the engine while you pound with whatever tire iron or hammer you have handy, on the bottom of the fuel tank. If the fuel pump is on its last leg, it may decide to work again (ie the brushes bad in the fuel pump motor). If it starts, dont shut it off, and get it home. Its not too hard to change, but requires dropping the tank down ( dont have to remove). Be careful be aware of gasoline hazards. Bring your checkbook when you buy the pump. Bosch is real proud of their little pump. Good luck

you could have a few problems

should check and see if the fuel pump is working should hear it runs for 2 secs when key is turned

should check battery connection

but if it stalled while driving
i would be looking for a wiring issue

ecm lost its ground or something
so check all ground wires to be clean and good
