Cadillac recall - rear pinion seal leaking oil, also include other GM cars
 

313,000 Cars in total to be recalled, list includes 2005-2007 cad. CTS and STS sedans as well as 2005-2007 SRX Crossover and the 2006-2007 Pont. Solstice. Recall to begin in Feb. 2008. Cadillac phone number (800) 982-2339 The problem is the rear pinion seal leaking oil and eventually can cause rear wheel lockup and out of control car.

I drive about 2,000-3,000 miles/month. I got the recall notice last week. It kinda' makes me wonder about my car's durability. Should I be worried?

Hey Blue: Durability issues seem to abound these days. Not only with Cadillac but many other GM and Ford/dodge products. This is not only in the cars themselves but in the parts that we use to do tuneups and repairs.It is a very frustrating situation and is not limited to Autos either. It really is not much wonder that Toyota and the likes are doing so well in the market place. One would think that the so called big three would start with the reliability issues first and move forward from there. But in this world where the parts are sourced from all over the globe the quality factor seems to be replaced with quantity. Should you be worried?? Yes, but what to do about it is the question.

Thanks for your thoughts. I would think (hope) that GM would put its best components and hardware into Cadillacs--that's kinda' the thinking I had when I picked the STS. Mercedes Benz has a video on their website where they race three bluetec diesel E-class sedans on a Laredo Texas racetrack for 100,000 miles almost nonstop. The video is short on details but it does sound impressive. I just finished reading about he new CTS-V--a 4 door Vette! Sounds so sweet. Do you think it would make it to 100,000 miles?

Without knocking MB's quality, allow me to say that the worse case condition of testing is NOT running 100,000 miles but the number of cycles for a given car. But is a good marketing scheme.

Cycles meaning, stopping the car, all components allowed to get ambient cold and restarting the car.
THAT is one cycle. A short stop for fuel is not counted or should not be counted as a complete cycle.
The bigger the gap between cold and hot, the toughest the cycle is.

This is one the reasons that in modern times most all electronics, including TV, stereos, computers, etc, are not powered down but put on "standby", therefore reducing the cycles that break them. Our Cadillacs, I believe most if not all, keep their electronics on standby and never quite power down.

Hard to do that with engines, oil seals, bearings, etc ...

With proper preventative maintenance you might get 300k if you decide to keep her that long, but in any case well over 200k.
