'96 DeVille Won't Start
OK Someone Please HELP!!!!
My'96 Deville started about 11 months ago, everyso often it would not crank when you turn the key. I hear a few relays kick, and the fuel pump cycle, but no crank. Battery is good, and so are cables, and everything else works. If I cycled the key on and off, it would start after a few tries, and then no problems for a week or so, sometimes longer. No I havent driven the car in 4 months, and wanted to move it in the shop. UH OH...Now after allmost 200 key cycles, I can not get any crank at all. Battery is fully charged (it was on trickle charge while sitting). I hope someone has an idea what the problem might be. All the relays seem to be fine, and the cycle when i turn to crank, but starter refuses to turn. |
RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
Check for codes. Could be bad starter - check for 12v at S terminal of starter with key in start position.

RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
No Codes...."S" terminal...This is a Northstar with an internal starter...Where would I find the "S" terminal?
I'm leaning more towards something with the key cylnder...is that a good chance? How do I check? PS: No key will make it crank and we have 3 so I have ruled out a bad key or pellet. |
RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
Starter is under intake. Do you have any warning lights or messages on DIC?
|
RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
Yes I know Starter is under intake..I stated internal starter, and NO CODES, at least non concerning PCM or engine. Only A/C code

RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
Is there 12v at S teminal of starter?
|
RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
Like I asked before....WHERE DO I FIND THE "S" terminal you speak of?
|
RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
ON THE STARTER!
|
RE: '96 DeVille Won't Start
ORIGINAL: slowroll ON THE STARTER! but are you suggesting tearing of the intake and all other items associated with getting to the starter just to check the "S" terminal? IMHO..I think there is a much better diagnostic then to tear the engine down in hopes there is a problem to be found...what your suggesting is kind of like telling someone to take off the head to see in inserts were ever put into the head bolt threads in the block. |

You asked, I answered. You don't like the answer,Oh well. If looked at your car.You would have found jumper harness connector for starter, at front of rear cam cover. Buy a FSM.

Yes you did answer..and incorrectly at that. The "S" ternimal on the starter you stated. Well the Jumper Harness is not the "S" terminal; but leads to the terminal. Your answer indicated to check at the starter itself. Be more clear in the future. And JFYI..I have a set on order. And did you ever think of maybe just possibly sharing info with others on the forum, not myself exactly, but maybe others not as fortunate enough to have a FSM, or maybe someone just needs a simple diagram and doesnt want to order the whole FSM. |

There is loads of info shared on this site without having to have an FSM. Most of the info given out here seems to be geared towards those who have been told something by dearler/mechanic and looking for second opinion. Some of the info, if you look around is for people doing/ or trying to do their own work. I gotta tell ya I advise everyone wanting to do their own work to have an FSM. Not knowing your particular situation it wasn't BAD advice. Many questions have been asked over and over again during a period of time and can getmonotonous at times and usually with no thanks. We are in the process of trying to build on the faq which is free to everyone member or not so that many questions can be answered with a simple search and read. It ain't perfect, but we have a pretty good crowd here and no one is getting paid. It took a minute to get there, but when it was all said and done you had an answer. Good luck with your project, and hope to see ya around our forum. Any questions regarding techs or the site please feel free to pm stealth or g.a.r.y anytime. |
