83 Eldo Blows Fuel Pump Fuse
The pump itself is new. Does anyone have any pointers?

Fuel pump
Did you possibly pinch the 12v line when putting the tank back in place?? Do you have the electronic level sensor on your car?? It is on the same circuit!!
|
I traced the electrical feed as best I could back to the fuse box...could not visually spot a wear thru. Ran a new fused line from the fuse box to the weatherpak at the rear bumper, spliced in there. Pump now runs, car started and ran for 2 minutes, then stalled and will not re-start. Put in new fuel filter, made no difference. Pump still hums.
Coil & ignition control module are new. Help! Frank |
No start
Have you checked out the fuel pump relay in the relay convienience center?? See if it has good continuity. To narrow down whether it is fuel or a spark issue, run a bit of fuel in the carb. or TB and see if it fires up momentarily then you know which direction to go. Did you manage to pull any codes at all off the DIC........Is this carb. or TB engine??
|
Yes, TB. It did start & run a couple of times after installing the new fuel pump and replacement lt. blue fuel pump feed wire. Then, nothing. Ran the computer codes...set for fuel circuitry problems (Fixed that) and bad MAP sensor (Replaced). Made no difference.
Hooked up my fuel pressure gauge...got 4# and it dropped off immediately after cranking stopped. Did I wire the pump backwards??? Pulled it today, re-wired, put it together...got 0# pressure. Pump ran quieter this way, though. When first installed (Correctly wired) it really sang when spinning. Guess I'll pull it tomorrow, swap it for another one, then try again. Both sock & in-line filters are new. Frank |

You should have between 9-12lbs pressure with fuel injection. Possible that you got a bad pump. Did you change out the filter on the frame rail??

New pump IN, pressure reads 11# static. Engine started, but ran like cr*p! Time to check out the distributor. I see Rock Auto sells a Cardone reman. for $113.00 AutoZone wants $160.00 for the same part number AND has to Special Order it. The new pick-up coil, ignition control module, capacitor, and other "New" parts in the reman distributor make this a worthwhile gamble. Car has 160.000+ miles on it. Plastic connectors inside the distributor are brittle and breaking up. Time to do this and see what happens.
Also, I noticed that the fuel pump does not shut off after a few seconds from turning the ignition switch ON. New problem...or normal? Newest pump is much quieter than the first New unit. Thanks for the input...always learning! Frank |

|
Yes, even installed a new relay...it made no difference. I believe that a relay supplies power to the appliance...I do not believe that it controlls the cycling of it.
