2002 northstar Deville
 

I have put 50,000 miles on it. It now has 97,000 just minor problems covered by Cadillac. I live in Florida and drove to Mich last week when I got in the mountains it heated up I shut it down one time it let it cool drove 2800 miles now in Florida and all is well. Should I flust the cooling system and change it. Help I am lost in this northstar world. BIg M

gee sorry we didnt address this yesterday.... for sure exchange coolant.... the N* likes it every couple years. then it will treat you right..... good luck bigm, and welcome to the forum

Thank you I have drained the system filled with dis water looking for a flush additive to give it a good cleaning.

oh NOOOOOO ... dont do that. Do not add acidic flush additive.

your coolant system should be CLEAN as it is.
just drain and refill with 50/50 mix of fresh coolant.

pure distilled water is also a no-no. you need the coolant. it has metal protection, water alone will not do it and you will see a head gasket failure if you run on water.

distilled water is EXCELLENT for the 50/50 mix, but not by itself.

also, at 75,000+ miles, add a bottle of LUCAS to the transmission.

To clear the FLUSH issue.

The use of a CHEMICAL FLUSH is for engines that are internally badly crusted with rust and scales which happens ONLY on engines that do not run with proper coolant mixes.

Never use on a clean coolant system.

You can easily have a 30 year old engine, always with good coolant mix, and you will NOT find rust/scale in the coolant system.

Keeping a proper coolant mix is one of the most overlooked/ ignored maintenance items and yet, cause some of the most expensive failures: head gaskets, radiator, water pump, and freeze plugs.

Change it at 5 years on a new car, every two years thereafter. EVEN IF THE car is used very little. The protection in the coolant is used up purely by being in contact with metal, and not by mileage.
