1997 Eldorado ETC P0340 Code Always

Hey guys,

Ive got a 1997 Eldorado ETC with a P0340 code that wont go away. It is always a current code. It was driven all winter and runs well. 110K miles. No other codes. The code returns almost immediately after clearing the PCM codes through the instrument cluster.

The Northstar was pulled out of the car a while ago for Timesert installation (engine was overheating) and the engine was gone through at the same time. The cams were taken off to install new valve seals. Cam Position Sensor was removed from the cylinder head. Most engine components were off/out of the engine.

The P0340 code came on immediately after first start up after the engine pull.

So far I have:

-Followed the Service manual for Testing and resolving this code and it did not lead me to any resolution.

-Replaced the Cam Position Sensor with another that passed the ohm test as well.

-Replaced the connectors at the cam position sensor and at the IC module.

-Replaced the IC Module.

-Double check continuity between the connector C2 to the Cam position sensor.

-Checked grounding at cylinder head and aluminum base of IC Module.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I am starting to think their may be a mechanical timing issue now. I am wondering if there is any way to verify this timing without pulling all the accessories and front cover off.

Let me know if I can provide any further information.

Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Pete

Tough one - What does code really mean?

OK, I guess this is a tough one.

Anyone know if this code means that the signal is not being generated/transmitted from the camshaft position sensor or if it could mean that the signal is not in tume with the rest of the system?

Im trying to understand if this is an electrical or a mechanical issue.

Also, anyone ever hear of a crankshaft position sensor/circuit causing this code to appear?

Thanks for any input.

Pete
