1989 Biarritz needs new sound system

Hi, Haven't posted in a couple of years. Finally purchased a 1989 Eldorado Biarritz, with only 44k miles on it. Car was loaded with factory sunroof, real gold and chrome spoke wheels, and the Bose Gold sound system. One of my first projects is the sound system. Was hoping to restore the existing system, but found out today that the front speakers and the stereo itself have problems. The cost is so high to repair all of it, that I now wish to replace everything with non-bose equipment. I'm looking to install a good system, not the best. If anyone has replaced their original equipment, and was pleased with the results, I'd be interested in knowing what equipment was used. Maybe more important than the actual equipment used, would be the specifications that would work best in this car.
I'm hoping to start with a head unit that has a USB connection. Only need to hook up my IPOD. I have no need for a C-D in the dash. Other than that, I need 5 1/4" front speakers, and the installer said the rear speakers are 4"x10", as opposed to the non-bose set-up, which has 6x9 speakers.
Any input would be appreciated, as I have so little knowledge of car audio equipment, and the options are overwhelming. thanks, Scott
