1986 Deville air and suspension questions
 

Dear Sir,
My air conditioning compressor clutch froze tearing the belt. Can I remove and repair the clutch? If I need to replace the compressor Should I replace the entire unit with a later model using 134 freon? If so what part number should I use?

I need to replace the suspension. I would like to use air shocks. What would you advise?

AC depends on what you can afford. Compressor pulley bearing can be replaced separately, and compressor dissabled to buy time to until compressor can be replaced. New bearing installed 200.00 roughly. New compressor 500.00+ installed.

Shocks - air shocks should be avail. from AC Delco. Most caddys came with air shocks in rear. Is ELC system working?

Thank you for your reply to my post. If I purchase a rebuilt a/c compressor I will need to use 134 as R12 is no longer avail. I under stand that using 134 will also require a change in the prom chip in the body computer. The difference in the fluid density between R12 and 134 requires this change as the high and low side switches will not work properly.
I understand that GM sold off all this type of material.
Do you know where I can find this chip?

If a/c compressor is locked up, you will need to replace: a/c compressor, compressor hoses, orfice tube, and being car is 20+ years old ac***alator. You will not need special chip to run 134a.

Thank you for your reply to my question. I found a firm in Tampa that has R12 so I will go ahead with a new compressor and continue with R12. I does appear that because the density differences between R12 and 134a changing to 134 will cause the unit stop toggling on and off. The only only option is to disconnect the negative battery lead. Doing so will clear the body computer. Even if this problem may not hppen frequently, it is difficult to deal with.[/align] [/align] Unfortunately the Proms are no longer available.
