rapid overheating
 

changed Rad, thermostate,coolant temp sensor,water pump and belt.cooling fans working. Temp reading on dash shows coolant temp rising to 265deg. , eng starts to shut off. water not hot,just warm,can hold onto all hoses...please help

at 1st glance, it sounds like the coolant is NOT circulating ..
cavitaion,
thermostat backwards,
pump impeller backwards,
belt installed improperly

engine coolant can overheat in place
while nothing is flowing through hoses.

Our car is experiencing the same type of overheating. I had to replace the starter a few weeks ago; darn thing is under the intake; don't know if that had anything to do with this problem or not. 1998 STS, 139,000 miles. Initially just a little warm, not hot. This weekend, after driving 20 miles, guage showed 3/4 hot; would go back to normal after stopping and shut-off. I thought it might be the thermostat, so I replaced it; no help. Someone suggested it was probably the water pump and pump drive belt; replaced it last night; still didn't help. After I got it installed, I started the car and let it idle 10 minutes; drove down our street 1 mile; temp. guage was 3/4 hot before I got back to the house. HELP!!!!!

had same problem with mine cadillac sts 98 with 125,000 thousand miles... i talked to a few different dealerships and they all told me that the guage cluster is most likely to blame for this.. you can tell by if your temp guage kinda jumps up.. not slowly goes up.. and then if it quickly goes back down.. your car is most likely not overheating.. if you can touch and hold on to the hoses then its probly running normal. i put a temp guage and was running about 210.. which is pretty much normal.. but my cady had said i was over 275 and was in limp mode..... hope this helps..
