How reliable are these vehicles?

Im currently looking at a 1999 caddy STS and it has basically 100 thousand miles on it.... Supposedly in extremely good care with oil done every 2,000 miles... will i get at least 200 K miles out of it or even more? Please tell me how good a car this is. i love the look and eveything but i need to spend this money in the right spot and not have alot of problems within 50 K miles. thanks

My rule of thumb,

If you buy a used car with 100k miles keep $2k in reserve for repairs.
At least have access to that much without putting yourself in a finacial bind.
If you have $8k to spend buy a $6k car.

I know this isn't always practical, but the odds say you will spend $1000 on it within 2 years.

Some cars have a better track record than others. Corrollas and cavaliers are simple cars, far less things to go wrong.
A cadillac luxury car is packed with high tech goodies that will cost you more money if one or more fail.
More parts = more potential failures.

A luxury car is just that, not a budget car.

If you are handy and can do your own repairs this helps cushin the blow a good bit.
But these cars can limit how much you can do yourself.

I have noticed that a few people are changing there oil before 3000 miles, is this necessary?

You know, I bought my car with 97k miles on it and I had no problems with it. Had to drive it across country to my new base without any issues. It wasn't until nature flooded my vehicle that I started to have issues.

I love my Cad.

Of course it all depends on what kind of driver you are, take care of it, and it will take care of you. Can't argue with the moderator though, should keep some reserve repair money. Because when it DOES happen... you're gonna need it.
