Buying a '97 Seville STS
 

Hi there!

im new here in the Forum!

I come from Germany, im 20 years old and actually i drive a '96 Mustang GT

But its now on time to drive a Cadillac ;)

So ive got some questions:

Are there any Problems with these Caddys i have to look for if ill buy one?
What about the Transmission? is it different from the US Model?

Just post anything you know, it would be helpfull for my buy!

I suppose it depends on what year you are trying to get, I have a '97 STS and I absolutely love it. But some obvious drawbacks you are going to have from owning a Cadillac is that if anything ever DOES go wrong it's going to cost you. As stated many times over in this forum.. a Cadillac is a thing of wonder, often far ahead technologically, providing the driver with comfort and amenities... But when they break, watch out.

I don't know about the tranny's in the German models, in fact I'm not familiar with anything that they might do differently over there.

There are some problems with the Northstar engines involving oil leaks. My dad's '02 doesn't do it, but mine is notorious for it. I have to put new oil in about once every 3k miles. Doesn't hurt me any, it's just a little annoying.

I'd always tell any potential buyer to go ahead and get a Cadillac, they are really great cars in every way. You just have to be prepared if something bad does happen. Take care.

"kherov" has made some good points, to which I'd like to add my own "wisdom"...:D

Try to get the service history for the STS to see if it has gone through regular maintenance, and if there were any major issues. Check if it has DEXCOOL in the cooling system (pink or redish-brown coolant) as this is vital for the engine's life expectancy. Pull the DTCs (Diagnostic Troube Codes) to see any current or past problems.
No matter what, you will be spending money on a 10-year old car, and there are no rules for "safely" buying a car. It is also an emotional process... do you like the car,... do you love it?

P.S.: The tranny is pretty good, it's part of the NorthStar drive-train.
