99 sts Replacing timing tensioner/chains, big job?

My 99 sts has developed timing gear noise. Wondering if anyone has had to fix this before. The car has 103k and my mechanic says it will cost at least 2k to repair and the engine will have to come out of the car. Just looking for some advice so I know where to go. Thanks in advance!

This forum does not seem to be very helpful. I would think someone has had this problem.[:@]

your post is too vauge.
There are so many variables its nearly impossible to give you any advise.
If you trust your mechanic then trust them.
If you don't get a second opinion.

With that said i can do the timing chains in the car but it's not easy.
We still charge the same labor time (mitchel book time) whether the motor stays in or comes out.

Thanks for the reply. Whatdo you think wouldbe a fair price in your opinion to change the timing chains and whatever else is related to this job. I'm just making the decision of fixing the car or selling as is. Just curious as to how many book hours involved if the engine is in or out of the car. Thanks again.

IIRC it's somewhere around 16hrs by the book.
Not sure what the parts cost, 3 chains, 6 gears, 3 tensioners, 3 guides, gaskets, coolant, oil and whatever else it might need while its apart.
I work on tons of these and it's not to ofteni seeone with a timing chain problem.
That doesn't mean yours is something else, but it would be unusual IMHO.

Thanks, the shop is removing the valve covers today and checking it out. They are charging me one hour to diagnose which I think is fair. I will post what they tell me. Thanks again.
