Cadillac Allante - PATCHES for SOFT TOP

Jim,
(fingerlakes)

remember the patch conversation of two years ago?

mine are still holding PERFECT but thye have faded into GRAY
which doesnt match the BLACK top so well.

that soft top material is pretty darn good when it comes to fading ..
now i gotta find a black dye to make the little round patches
match.

i will have to dig into my archives and find our conversations over
this delicate matter of "patches" ...

If you have to take them off to dye them and the color matched the top when you got them, then just put on new ones.........

I remember that conversation, as others were putting patches on the outside, and since my top did not wear through as yet, only the inside headliner was worn, I put inside patches on mine, this I was doing as a temporary fix, but is still holding up so I no longer pursued an alternative solution. The inside patches are helping to prevent future wear in the problem areas, and seem to fit the bill. Jim,

mine caught the "helper spring post" and got a small rip, both sides.
used the iron-on patches, jean's material in black. matched pretty good,
but cant take the sun like the soft top material.

the patches are in great shape, but turned gray since.

hey, who was it that got emotional on patches? i forget ...

Gary,
remove? not sure how to do that,
they are iron-on stuff. i supposed i could reheat and hope they pull off
w/o taking a chunk of the top with them. maybe worth trying.

i have now found a new bonding agent: PATCH ATTACH
i use it for the Scouts patches and i believe it may do well on the top with
a piece of top material instead of the jean's stuff.

opinions?

Maybe someone here will see your post that had there orig. top replaced and saved there old top for scrap and would donate a piece for you, maybe someoone will see this. If not possibly obtaining some material from an installer? Then use the patch attach.

RE: PATCHES on SOFT TOP

you are not going to believe this, but i got a 2nd top in a crate from the Texas donor.
i got it for the linkages, but it has the cloth (ripped), the cover (dinged), and the pull-down with it.
hey, i got it for the price of a pull down.

dont feel bad, i dont know what i was thinking either ..
maybe someone put the fear of flying tops and failing pull-downs in me?

i was thinking of doing exactly what you said.

As usual, wifey and I disagree on car things. Why get black for Johnny Monzo's patches as you won't be able to see them. Thank you dear that is exactly the idea. From 10 feet hard to see. At 1 foot (almost) looks like it belongs.

Ok so what is this _ _ _ _ top doing now! Rear pulls down until the very bottom of cycle and then releases. Adjustment or major fix.. hyperion is correct --if the top was right, they'd still be building this car!

You have always shown to have class .. I also like your choice - subtle.
When i see emblem / badge overdone Cadillacs, any Cadillac, i start thinking "pimp" ...
