exhaust leak
 

I have a exhaust leak in my 89 brougham with a 307 where the exhaust pipe meets the manifold. Seems like if I try to loosen the bolts on the pipe I will break the studs on the manifold, then I will have much bigger problems. The only thing I could think of was to put lots of high temp silicone used for maniflods on the leaking area and hope for the best. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS????? Thanks

Seems to me that the gasket is leaking but can't be 100% sure without seeing the car. The best thing to do is get the studs loosened. You probably need an acetylene torch to do that.

For a few dollars there is such a thing as exhaust cement which will may be a temporary repair. It is generally used to make perfectly sealed joints on new systems. It actually cures with heat and forms rock hard. I persoanlly don't think your silicone idea will work out. You could try the cement paste around the leaking gasket. Unlike silicone it will be easier to chip off if you need to.

Thanks for the info the studs are rusty-I am afraid I will break them. My mechanic did not want to go there. Again if those studs break on the manifold, I got much bigger problems than A minor exhaust leak. Thanks again. ps-I did see Summit had a muffler cement. But not lots of web sites showed it.

I am in Canada but this muffler cement is readily available at Canadian Tire stores and Parts Source stores. I just realized that there is also an exhaust metallic tape available that could actually be used as well, by wrapping it around the joint to make a gasket. Again heat helps cure the bond.
