Climatic - How much R134
 

I got a new Climatic Compressor for my Fleetwood Brougham 1988 - and
I´ve a Repair Manual for it. But there is no Hint how much R134a to fill into
the Climatic System. We tryed now 750ml and it is Cool. Is it to much or to less for optimal cooling ?

does that mean you installed it? what else did you change?
refrigerant capacity can range anywhere from about 28 ounces (1.75 lbs.) to as much as 64 ounces (4.00 lbs.) or more.

Usually three to four (14 oz cans) cans is enough to fully recharge a typical passenger car A/C system that was empty. If the system is low, one or two cans of refrigerant are usually all that's required.

To avoid an improper charge, always consult the manufacturer's specifications for refrigerant capacity. An improper charge will cause reduced system performance, and may even result in system damage.

normally, one uses a pressure gage when filling the system, specially when changing components that are not OEM.

too little and your compressor will shut down,
too much and you can blow a hose or damage the system.
if you are not getting a LOW refrigerant message, for sure, stop.

I changed everything to fit for R134a (better say - my Garage changed it ;) ) - But we did´nt know how much ml (or kg) fits. At one time someone gave us a limit of 200 - 300 ml / thats 0,2 - 0,3 kg - but that
was not the goal ;). We can´t get cool air.
So i searched my Manual but there is no Info in ml - it help my to hear that 1,75lbs is about the minimum, thats about 800ml. Now there are 750ml filled, and it is cool, but it could be cooler ;).
so i try 900ml - because you schould fill up 10% less than R12 with R134a.
That schould fit.
I don´t know, but i think i haven´t a Warning sign for too low Climatic compression. I disasabled the car and know most every screw, because i
restore my Caddy and i have 2 of them.
If anyone have a Fleetwood Brougham 1988 or 1989 with 5l engine, every
tip and hint is welcome.
But i think after reading your post and calculating lbs into kg - 750ml are the very low minimum,
so i will fill up to 900 and check again.

The best way is to get a reading with a pressure gauge, should read between 25 and 45 psi with system operating. Usually the ac***ulator has a label on it, yellow with black writting in most GM's that tells you the system capacity. What Stealth wrote is right as well. Two cans is probably good, three most likely getting near capacity. The oldest FSM I have here is for 1993 Fleetwood, it has to be almost identical to yours, and it says system capacity is 1.42 kg or 3.125 lbs. of R-12. So based on your rule of 10% less you could fill with 1.27 kg of R134a.
